Property, Means of Production, Labor

As Trotsky, among others, formulates it, Socialism eliminates Capitalist exploitation by the elimination of private property.  But, on standard Marxism diagnosis, the fundamental exploitative scenario consists in the owner of the means of production profiting from the Labor of others.  Accordingly, the immediate corrective to exploitation is the collectivization of, specifically, the Means of Production, which spans everything from land to tools.  Furthermore, though often only occasionally explicitly expressed, entailed in the collectivization of the Means of Production is that of Labor, as well, i. e. the erstwhile owners of the means of production now share in the Labor, as well.  So, Trotsky's formulation tends to encourage the popular concept of Socialism as merely a redistribution of goods, which obscures the essence of the Marxist response to Capitalism.
