Friendship, We, Revolution

Aristotle conceives Friendship as based on Self-Love, because it consists in the treatment of the Friend as another I.  However, even as he discerns the role that the relation plays in any mode of political organization, he does not consider one further stage of its development--the combination of the Is into a We. Thus, the appearance of the latter at the outsets of the U. S. Constitution and the Marseillaise, unprecedented in the history of Political Philosophy, signifies its revolutionary character, and, conversely, the synthesis that is the foundation of modern Revolution.
