Friendship and Socialism

The codification of the priority of Theory over Practice begins with Aristotle. on his grounds that the former, but not the latter, can be self-sufficient.  However, a Practical Virtue which he recognizes, but that does not reduce to his standard formulation, i. e. an activity guided by a Mean, is Friendship, which consists in the mutually-recognized, reciprocal treatment of an other as another Self.  Now, Aristotle does not consider that Theoretical Virtue, i. e. Contemplation, rather than being independent of Friendship, is deprived of it, and, hence, is the lesser Good.  So, specifically lost in the subsequent history is the significance of mutual recognition, which is not included in Kant's Kingdom of Ends, and is lacking by Hegel's Unhappy Consciousness.  It also eludes any reduction of an association to the sum of those associated.  In other words, Friendship presents a paradigm for Socialism, though it is unclear if it is appreciated as such by Marxists.
