As has been previously discussed, Trotsky, in asserting that there are some means that Socialism does not justify, conceives the relation between Means and End as a continuum, of which the former is an earlier phase, and the latter, the final one. Now, though not himself a Marxist, Dewey deepens that analysis, arguing that the split of the two phases reflects a separation of Classes--the Working class, and the Leisure class whose ends the former serves. So, implicit in Dewey's analysis is an insight that Trotsky misses--the abolition of Classes in Socialism, and the integration of Means and End in action, are systematically related.
